One of My Heroes of Natural Healing

In the late 1970’s, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Bernard Jensen when I attended an iridology seminar of his in New York City. The most enduring impression that remains from that experience is the feeling I had when that venerable gentleman walked into the room for the first time. It was as though the room was suddenly flooded with sunlight. Dr. Jensen’s magnificent vitality and presence filled the room with instant healing energy. Throughout the seminar, he tirelessly exuded vibrant energy as he enthusiastically and passionately taught us about the art of seeing how the iris of the eye reflected the health of various parts of the body.

One of the interesting aspects of his discussion was how the colon or lower bowel, relates to all parts and organs of the body. In looking at the iris, the colon is represented as surrounding the pupil of the eye. Arranged around it are various areas that represent areas of the body. Dr. Jensen’s contention was that bowel health impacts the whole body in many ways. The following quotes by Dr. Jensen from his classic, ‘Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management,’ reflect his conviction that paying attention to the well-being of the large intestine is of major importance for anyone who aspires to optimal health.

"In the 50 years I've spent helping people to overcome illness, disability and disease, it has become crystal clear that poor bowel management lies at the root of most peoples' health problems.

In treating over 300,000 patients, it is the bowel that invariably has to be cared for FIRST before any effective healing can take place.

In times past, knowledge of the bowel was more widespread and people were taught how to care for the bowel. Somehow bowel wisdom got lost and it became something that no one wanted to talk about anymore.

By putting the bowel in the closet and making believe it doesn't exist, many people have gone down the path of improper living, treating the bowel indiscriminately and reaping the sad harvest in later years.

Knowing the ways of keeping the bowel healthy and in good shape is the best way I know to keep away from the grip of disease and sickness.

The bowel-wise person is the one who is armed with good knowledge, practices discrimination in his eating habits and walks the path of the higher life. His days are blessed with health, vitality, optimism and the fulfillment of life's goals. He is a blessing and source of inspiration to family and associates. His cheerful disposition comes from having a vital, toxin-free body made possible by the efficient, regular, and cleansing action of a loved and well-cared for bowel.

Every person who desires the higher things in life must be aware of proper bowel management, what it is, and what is required. In so doing, you will discover many secrets of life, develop a positive attitude toward yourself and become the master of body function."

-Bernard Jensen

In the early 1990’s, My husband Chuck and I traveled to Pougkeepsie, New York for an iridology consultation with Dr. Donald V. Bodeen, DC, longtime friend and colleague of Dr. Jensen. We chatted with Dr. Bodeen about after our consultation. He talked about Dr. Jensen and I asked how he was doing. Chuck and I learned that Dr. Jensen was now 88 years old. That in itself was not as remarkable as his recent story of healing. He had been diagnosed with metastasized prostate cancer; not only that, he had sustained severe injuries in an auto accident and required a hospital stay and physical rehabilitation. Severe stress for anyone, and certainly even more challenging for an 88-year-old! The amazing part of this story is that Dr. Jensen refused all conventional treatment for the cancer, applied his own healing philosophy. He recovered fully - living to the age of 93! Dr. Jensen was a living testament to the power of his healing methods.

For many years I didn't use his knowledge. It lay forgotten in the swirl of fancy pills and exotic treatments while I suffered with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome for over five years. Taking care of something so basic as bowel health was not mentioned to me by any of my holistic doctors. Yet colon detoxification was hands-down one of the few most profound therapies that contributed to my recovery. Not only that, but the fact that I was able to do it myself contributed in a major way to my sense of empowerment in mastering my own health.

However, it was someone else who reminded me of the power of this therapy after I had forgotten...
